At a glance
- Toyota Tsusho Vice Chairman Ichiro Kashitani led a delegation that presented the plan to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on October 6.

  • Work is expected to begin in 2027 in an economic zone, and the company aims to start full-scale production by 2029.
  • Toyota says the project can create jobs, support technology transfer and help train skilled workers. It also plans to expand its sales and service network to all divisional cities.
  • Bangladesh’s automobile policy encourages local assembly and manufacturing while setting expectations for local value addition.
  • However, Toyota has not yet specified the plant’s capacity, models, investment amount or local-content targets.

Context

Toyota’s proposed plant is part of its broader push to expand in Bangladesh, where it sees hybrid vehicles as a practical near-term option.

Bangladesh already has a policy framework that encourages vehicle assembly, manufacturing and local parts production. Toyota has described the project under the vision “With Bangladesh, For Bangladesh,” with plans for technical and vocational training alongside production.

Why It Matters

A local Toyota production facility may give Bangladesh a foothold in higher-value manufacturing, create technical jobs and help develop suppliers for vehicle parts. It also may reduce reliance on finished-car imports over time. Although local production alone does not guarantee lower prices or less pressure on foreign currency. That depends on the plant’s scale, how much is sourced domestically and whether consumers can afford the vehicles.

What We Think

Toyota’s plan is promising. At the same time, the project also puts a practical question before policymakers: Will Bangladesh be able to turn investment announcements into durable industrial capacity? Tax benefits and infrastructure support matter, but so do clear commitments on local sourcing, skills training, safety and environmental standards. For consumers, the measure of success is not the factory opening. It is reliable vehicles and after-sales service at accessible prices, alongside skilled jobs and a supply chain that grows inside the country.
