At a glance
- Police detained around 290 people at the JSD’s Dhaka office on 26 September after BNP youth-wing members (the Jubo Dal) alleged that a secret meeting of the banned Awami League was taking place.

  • JSD said it was holding a scheduled representatives’ meeting and denied the allegation.
  • Police later arrested 27 people, alleging they had chanted “Joy Bangla” and created disorder and the court denied their bail.
  • Human Rights Watch says the arrests are part of a continuing pattern of arbitrary detention and restrictions on political rights.
  • It also cites arrests in Barisal and Dhaka linked to alleged Awami League gatherings.

Context

The JSD meeting took place at the party’s central office in Dhaka. Police said they acted after receiving information where Jubo Dal members also alleged that banned Awami League members had gathered there. JSD officials said the gathering was a planned party meeting and alleged that BNP-affiliated activists attacked participants before police detained them.

Authorities released many of those initially detained after identity checks, while 27 were arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and later denied bail.

Why It Matters

Police have a duty to investigate credible threats, but allegations from rival party activists by themselves may not justify sweeping detentions. Public evidence and fair process is important when hundreds are taken into custody and dozens face court proceedings.

What We Think

Human Rights Watch has raised concerns about arbitrary detentions and authorities have a role in enforcing bans on prohibited political groups to prevent violence and public disorder. At the same time, before moving on with the court proceedings, evidence and fair investigation is important to ensure that state security does not turn into political repression.
