At a glance
- Fakhrul urged more European investment, saying Bangladesh’s current democratic environment has created new investment opportunities.

  • EU ambassadors called for a level playing field to expand trade and investment with Bangladesh and reaffirmed support for constitutional and judicial reforms.
  • Bangladesh also wants more EU countries to join the Talent Partnership initiative and expand legal migration routes for skilled workers.
  • Fakhrul sought greater EU humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya and stronger European support for their safe, voluntary and dignified return to Myanmar.

Context

The appeal comes as Bangladesh is seeking investment and trade opportunities across China, the US and Europe. On September 28, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir proposed a 1,200 kilometre road linking Chattogram to Kunming through Myanmar. That follows $9.21 billion in investment proposals from 12 Chinese companies after Tarique Rahman’s June visit to China.

The US track is also expanding, with Bangladesh seeking American investment in energy, infrastructure, manufacturing and technology. With the EU, the priority also includes preserving export access after LDC graduation. Dhaka is pursuing an FTA with the bloc while working through 61 non tariff barriers, of which it says 48 have been addressed.

Why It Matters

The European relationship carries a different weight from the China and US investment drives. China offers capital and new trade routes, while Bangladesh is courting US companies for investment and commercial partnerships. Europe is already Bangladesh’s largest export market, so the terms of that relationship affect the ability of Bangladeshi exporters to keep selling there as LDC preferences change.

That makes the EU ambassadors’ call for a level playing field significant. Bangladesh is asking European companies to invest more while simultaneously negotiating the trade conditions under which Bangladeshi companies will access European markets. Investment and market access are being negotiated as parts of the same economic relationship.

What We Think

Bangladesh’s outreach to China, the US and Europe makes sense as a broad investment strategy, but the three tracks cannot simply be treated as interchangeable sources of foreign capital. The Yunnan proposal is about connectivity and access to China, the US push is centred on attracting companies and investment, while the European relationship combines investment with the much larger question of export access.
