At a glance
- Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir called for more diversified, higher-value Bangladeshi exports to Hong Kong, including fruits, jute and leather goods, to reduce the trade deficit.

  • Bangladesh’s bilateral trade with Hong Kong was $415 million in FY2024–25, including $307 million in imports and $108 million in exports.
  • Exports rose only slightly to $109.51 million in FY2025–26, underlining the need for stronger market access and product diversification.
  • Bangladesh proposed B2B links for fruit exporters, trade-fair support for SMEs, e-certificates of origin, customs and logistics improvements, and an MoU on trade and investment.
  • Hong Kong was presented as a gateway for Bangladesh to southern China and the Greater Bay Area; HKTDC was invited to send a business delegation to Bangladesh.

Context

Hong Kong is a major Asian trading and logistics hub with close links to mainland China. For Bangladesh, it can provide access not only to Hong Kong consumers but also to importers, investors and supply chains connected with southern China and the Greater Bay Area.

Why It Matters

Bangladesh’s exports remain concentrated in garments, while trade with Hong Kong is heavily tilted toward imports. The limited increase in exports in FY2025–26 shows that Bangladesh has yet to make meaningful gains in this market. Expanding sales of processed food, jute-based eco-products, leather goods and IT services could reduce export dependence on garments and create opportunities for SMEs.

What We Think

Bangladesh can turn the proposals into practical commercial arrangements rather than limit engagement to meetings and trade fairs. Priority can be given to exporters capable of meeting Hong Kong’s standards for quality, packaging, traceability, environmental compliance, and delivery time. However, success will depend on product quality, food safety, certification, reliable shipping and competitive prices. Hong Kong’s value is therefore strategic: it can become a testing ground and distribution gateway for Bangladeshi products entering higher-value Chinese and regional markets.
